Volunteer Opportunities at NAMI Jacksonville
About the Peer Support Group:
NAMI support groups are a safe place to share experiences with others who understand. Our peer support groups are for individuals living with mental health conditions or co-occurring substance use. They are led by trained facilitators who have lived experience.
Responsibilities:
- Co-facilitate a 90-minute support group using the structured NAMI support group model at least once a month.
- Provide a safe and respectful environment for support group participants.
- Respect the privacy of support group participants.
Qualifications:
- You must be:
- An individual living with a mental health condition or co-occurring substance use.
- Available for 2-3 days of free training.
- Familiar with the Zoom platform.
- An active member of NAMI Jacksonville.
- Being bilingual is a plus.
About NAMI Ending the Silence:
NAMI Ending the Silence presentations are designed for middle and high school students, school staff, and/or adult family members of students, to create awareness about mental illness, the warning signs of mental health conditions, and how to get help for themselves or a friend. There are two trained presenters: one who presents factual information, and a young adult with a mental health condition who shares their journey of recovery. Audience members can ask questions to get a better understanding.
Responsibilities:
- Co-present a 1-hour program at least twice per year.
Qualifications:
- You must be:
- An 18 to 35-year-old in recovery with a mental health condition, or an adult living with a mental health condition, or a family member of a person living with a mental health condition.
- Available for 2-3 days of free training.
- Familiar with the Zoom platform.
- An active member of NAMI Jacksonville.
- Being bilingual is a plus.

About the Family Support Group:
NAMI support groups are a safe place to share experiences with others who understand. Our family support groups are for family members, caregivers and friends of people living with mental health conditions. The groups are led by trained facilitators who have lived experience.

- A family member or caregiver of an individual living with a mental health condition.

About NAMI In Our Own Voice:
In NAMI In Our Own Voice presentations, trained volunteers with lived experience of a mental health condition or co-occurring substance use, talk candidly about their experiences. These presentations are designed to change attitudes and assumptions about people with mental health conditions.
Responsibilities:
- Present a 1-hour program at least twice per year.
Qualifications:
- You must be:
- An adult (18 years or older) in recovery with a mental health condition or co-occurring substance use.
- Available for 2-3 days of free training.
- Familiar with the Zoom platform.
- An active member of NAMI Jacksonville.
- Being bilingual is a plus.

About NAMI on Campus:
NAMI on Campus clubs work to end the stigma that makes it hard for students to talk about mental health and get the help they need. Clubs hold creative meetings, hold innovative awareness events, and offer signature NAMI programs through partnerships with NAMI state organizations and affiliates across the nation.
Responsibilities:
- Co-lead a club on your high school or college campus, using the NAMI on Campus structure and the NAMI name.
- Coordinate with NAMI Jacksonville on a monthly basis.
- Coordinate with high school or college leadership.
Qualifications:
- You must be:
- A current high school or college student.
- An active member of NAMI Jacksonville.
- Being bilingual is a plus.

About NAMI Jacksonville's Helpline:
NAMI Jacksonville's Helpline provides information, guidance and compassion to anyone in need of non-emergency mental health resources. The Helpline is staffed by trained volunteers with lived experience, who check voicemail and email once daily, and respond to inquiries within 24 hours.
Responsibilities:
- Respond to inquiries within 24 hours.
- Provide a safe and respectful environment for people seeking help.
- Listen with a compassionate ear.
- Respect the privacy of people seeking help.
Qualifications:
- You must be:
- An adult (18 years or older) in recovery with a mental health condition; or a family member, caregiver, or friend of a loved one with a mental health condition.
- Available to serve on the Helpline for at least 6 months.
- Available for 2 hours of free training.
- Familiar with technology to efficiently check phone messaging systems and email.
- An active member of NAMI Jacksonville.
- Being bilingual is a plus.
About NAMI Family-to-Family:
NAMI Family-to-Family is an 8-session class designed for families, caregivers and friends of people living with mental health conditions. Taught by trained volunteers who are family members with lived experience, the classes consist of presentations, discussions and interactive exercises that teach participants skills and strategies for caring for someone with a mental health condition.
Responsibilities:
- Co-facilitate an 8-session program using the structured NAMI model at least twice per year.
- Provide a safe and respectful environment for class participants.
- Respect the privacy of class participants.
Qualifications:
- You must be:
- An adult (18 years or older) family member (parent, sibling, adult child, spouse, partner, etc.) of an individual living with a mental health condition.
- Available for 2-3 days of free training.
- Familiar with the Zoom platform.
- An active member of NAMI Jacksonville.
- Being bilingual is a plus.
About NAMI Peer-to-Peer:
NAMI Peer-to-Peer is an 8-session class for adults living with with mental health conditions or co-occurring substance use, who want to better understand themselves and their recovery. The classes are taught by trained volunteers with lived experience, and include activities, discussions, and videos.
Responsibilities:
- Co-facilitate an 8-session program using the structured NAMI model at least twice per year.
- Provide a safe and respectful environment for class participants.
- Respect the privacy of class participants.
Qualifications:
- You must be:
- An adult (18 years or older) in recovery, with a mental health condition or co-occurring substance use.
- Available for 2-3 days of free training.
- Familiar with the Zoom platform.
- An active member of NAMI Jacksonville.
